Worldwide the corn price is driven mainly by the CBoT exchange in Chicago, the most liquid corn market, and in Europe by the contracts on Euronext (MATIF) in Paris. We convert the quotations at the current EUR/USD rate into euros per tonne (€/t) at a standard moisture of about 14 %, because that is how corn is bought and sold in Slovakia.
As with the other commodities, one must distinguish between the exchange and the purchase price of corn. The exchange price is the world reference quotation; the purchase price is the amount you actually receive — and for corn it is affected most strongly by the harvest moisture and the associated drying costs.
Several factors act on the final corn price at once:
The Chicago exchange sets the world reference price for corn; its movements feed through to European and Slovak purchase prices too.
Corn is harvested wet (often 25 – 35 %) and must be dried to ~14 %. Drying costs and weight loss directly lower the price of wet corn.
World trade runs in dollars, so a move in the euro-dollar rate changes the corn price expressed in €/t.
The share of broken grains, impurities and any mycotoxins lower quality and price. Healthy, well-dried grain achieves the best purchase price.
Corn goes into feed mixes, starch and bioethanol. The strength of this demand determines how quickly and at what price the harvest is sold.
The distance to loading, the availability of a drier and the delivery date influence how much of the exchange price remains in the purchase price.
For corn the harvest moisture decides the price above all. The price of wet corn is always converted to dry matter and reduced by the drying costs and weight loss.
| Parameter | Recommended value | Effect on price |
|---|---|---|
| Harvest moisture | 25 – 35 % | higher = higher drying costs |
| Moisture after drying | ≤ 14 % | storable, full price |
| Broken and damaged grains | low share | higher share lowers the price |
| Impurities | ≤ 2 – 3 % | deduction above the limit |
| Mycotoxins (e.g. DON) | within the limit | over the limit = rejection/deduction |
Tip: If you have your own or available drying capacity, compare the price of wet corn "off the field" with the price of dry corn after deducting the drying costs. It often pays to deliver corn already dried — we are happy to help you make the calculation.
Corn is usually harvested in Slovakia from September to November. During the harvest a large volume of wet corn enters the market at once, which tends to be a period with pressure on the price. Those able to dry and store corn can spread the sale over time — but must factor in the costs of drying, storage and tied-up capital.

Corn is harvested with high moisture (often 25 – 35 %) and must be dried to ~14 % before storage. Drying costs energy and means a weight loss, so the price of wet corn is converted to dry matter and is lower than the price of dry corn ready for delivery.
