The barley price does not have one clear global futures market like wheat or corn. It is driven mainly by demand from maltings and breweries for malting barley and by the prices of wheat and corn, which are an alternative in feed mixes. The reference for the European market is the quotations on the MATIF exchange in Paris and the overall development of the grain market. We give the price in euros per tonne (€/t), as barley is bought in Slovakia.
For barley the price is decided above all by the intended use. Malting barley for malt (and then beer) production must meet strict parameters and achieves a higher price; feed barley has lower requirements and is cheaper. That is why two barley deliveries can sell at markedly different prices.
The difference between malting and feed barley is the most important for the price. Malting barley must have a lower protein content (paradoxically, too high protein hinders malting), high germination, even and full grain (good sizing) and must not be pre-germinated. Feed barley goes into feed production, where a higher protein content is actually welcome and the requirements for sizing and germination are lower — so it is cheaper.
