What is the current wheat price?

In Central Europe the wheat price is driven mainly by two world exchanges — MATIF in Paris (Euronext, milling wheat), the reference for the European market, and CBoT in Chicago, which sets the tone for global trade. We convert both quotations at the current EUR/USD rate into euros per tonne (€/t), because that is exactly how wheat is bought and sold in Slovakia.

It is important to distinguish between the exchange and the purchase price of wheat. The exchange price is the world reference quotation shown in the table above. The purchase price is the amount you actually receive when selling — it starts from the exchange, but is adjusted by the quality of your harvest, the volume, the delivery date and the transport costs to the place of processing. That is why two seemingly identical wheat deliveries can sell at different prices.

What the wheat price depends on

Several factors act on the final wheat price at once. Understanding these influences helps you better judge the right time to sell your harvest:

World exchanges

MATIF Paris and CBoT Chicago set the reference price. Their movements immediately affect purchase prices in Slovakia too.

EUR/USD rate

Since world trade runs in dollars, a weaker euro against the dollar usually lifts the wheat price in €/t, and vice versa.

Harvest quality

Milling (food-grade) wheat with higher protein and falling number is more expensive than feed wheat. Quality is the strongest lever in your hands.

Harvest and stocks

Estimates of world production, the weather in key regions and the state of stocks change the supply-and-demand balance — and with it the price.

Mill demand and export

Interest from mills, feed producers and exporters (e.g. via the Black Sea ports) decides how quickly the harvest is sold.

Logistics and region

The distance to loading, transport availability and delivery date influence how much of the exchange price remains in the purchase price.

Wheat quality parameters

The wheat price is influenced above all by its quality. Below are indicative parameters that decide classification as milling or feed wheat. Exact limits vary by buyer and vintage.

Indicative parameters — milling vs. feed wheat
ParameterMilling wheatFeed wheat
Protein≥ 11.5 – 13.0 %no strict requirement
Falling number (Hagberg)≥ 220 – 250 s
Specific weight≥ 76 – 78 kg/hl≥ 72 kg/hl
Moisture≤ 14 %≤ 14 %
Impurities≤ 2 %higher tolerance
Price levelhigherlower

Tip: Before selling, have a wheat analysis done (moisture, protein, falling number, specific weight). With precise parameters we can give you a more specific and usually better purchase price — and you avoid deductions on delivery.

Milling vs. feed wheat — the price difference

Milling wheat goes to mills to make flour and must therefore meet stricter parameters — above all sufficient protein, falling number and specific weight. This earns it a higher price. Feed wheat goes into feed production, where quality requirements are lower, and is therefore cheaper. The difference between the price of milling and feed wheat changes with mill demand and the quality of the vintage and is usually a few to several tens of euros per tonne.

Price of soft and hard wheat (durum)

Besides ordinary soft wheat we also buy hard wheat (durum) and spelt. Durum wheat is used mainly for pasta and semolina and, at good quality (vitreousness, protein), usually achieves a higher price than milling soft wheat. If you grow durum or spelt, state it in your inquiry — we will prepare an offer tailored to the specific type.

Seasonality: how the wheat price changes during the year

The wheat price has a pronounced seasonal component. The greatest pressure on the price usually comes during the harvest (July – August), when a large volume of new crop enters the market at once and stores are full. In the following months, as the supply is gradually sold off, the price may recover. The decision to "sell right after the harvest or store and wait" therefore affects your result — but also weigh the costs and risks of storage (drying, losses, tied-up capital).

How to sell wheat at the best price

A few practical steps to help you get a better price for wheat:

  1. Know the parameters of your harvest. An analysis of moisture, protein and falling number gives you a stronger negotiating position.
  2. Watch the exchange and the EUR/USD rate. Even a small move on MATIF or CBoT is reflected in the purchase price.
  3. Consider the timing of the sale. Compare the price during the harvest with the option of storing and selling later.
  4. Consolidate the volume. Larger and homogeneous lots are easier to plan logistically and tend to be more attractive on price.
  5. Choose a reliable buyer with its own logistics. You save on transport costs and have the certainty of fast payment.
